Want to see some amazing student activism going on around the issue of Chick-fil-A, and the restaurant's ties to anti-gay organizations like Focus on the Family, the National Organization for Marriage, and the Ruth Institute? Take a look at the University of Illinois, where students on campus have not only been raising awareness about Chick-fil-A's anti-gay connections, but have been organizing to remove the chain from campus.
As The Daily Illini reported this week, student organizations on campus have come together to take action against Chick-fil-A, challenging the chicken restaurant's presence on campus. Caroline Peterson, a second-year law student at the University of Illinois, said in a radio interview that Chick-fil-A's values -- which include holding retreats for and praising the work of activists trying to prevent same-sex marriage -- are inconsistent with the values of inclusion, diversity, and equality.
"I think if a restaurant enjoys the privilege of being in the (Student) Union, it should represent the values that are inclusive of all persons, all students, and their civil rights," Peterson said.
Perhaps that sentiment is starting to pick up steam on the campus. Because as The Daily Illini notes, the Illini Union Board has approved two motions in regards to Chick-fil-A, which take a strong stance against Chick-fil-A's work with anti-gay activists.
“The Illini Union Board recommends to the director of the Illini Union that the relationship with Chick-fil-A be discontinued as soon as financially and legally possible,” said Edward Slazinik, director of the Illini Union.

And if you want to show your solidarity with students around the country protesting the presence of Chick-fil-A on their campus, send a message here. Students at Texas Tech University, the University of North Texas, the University of New Orleans, Mississippi State University, Indiana University (Bloomington campus), the University of Arizona, Ole Miss, Florida Gulf Coast University and LSU are also working on campus to draw attention to Chick-fil-A's anti-gay work.
Perhaps Chick-fil-A should have just stuck to serving fast-food, rather than engaging in the political battle to take civil rights away from same-sex couples?
