Dear Terrence, This week it was revealed that Speaker John Boehner is using taxpayer money to pay for private lawyers to defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. And not only is Speaker Boehner using our money to defend discrimination against gay and lesbian couples, he's agreed to pay one of the most expensive law firms in the country (one with strong ties to the Bush administration) over $500,000 for work on the case. This is nothing more than rank hypocrisy from a politician who keeps on telling us that our country is too broke to pay for vital government services, but sees no problem using our money to score cheap political points. All loving and committed couples deserve equal recognition and protection under the law. DOMA denies legally married gay and lesbian couples literally thousands of federal benefits granted to opposite-sex married couples. The Justice Department under Attorney General Eric Holder has already determined it's unconstitutional and decided not to defend its constitutionality. Unfortunately, Speaker Boehner has the right to hire whatever overpriced lawyers he wants. But if Speaker Boehner wants to stick to his story of wanting to cut government spending, this is a perfect place to start. And if he's intent on paying high-priced, Republican party boosting lawyers to stand on the wrong side of history, he should do so on his own dime. Thank you for speaking out.
