BURLINGTON, Vt. — A federal grand jury has indicted a Christian missionary on a charge he helped a woman take her 9-year-old daughter to Central America during a custody dispute with her former Vermont lesbian partner.
The one paragraph indictment dated May 12 against Timothy Miller alleges he helped Lisa Miller take her daughter Isabella to Nicaragua from the United States between September 2009 and April 2010.
Timothy Miller, a Mennonite missionary, appeared in court last month in Burlington and was released on bail.
Lisa Miller and Janet Jenkins, of Fair Haven, Vt., were joined in a Vermont civil union in 2000 but broke up after having the child. Lisa Miller was awarded custody, but refused to grant visitation. After years of legal fights, a judge awarded custody to Jenkins, the non-biological parent.
