During the White House briefing Thursday, press secretary Robert Gibbs took two questions on same-sex marriage following up on President Barack Obama’s assertion the day before that “attitudes evolve, including mine.”
Asked by MSNBC to expand on when the president might complete his evolution on the matter, Gibbs said he didn’t have much to add to the president’s remarks from Wednesday.
“He went through what his position is, he went through why his position was that,” said Gibbs, “But at the same time, he talks to colleagues and coworkers and hears them talking about being treated differently, and the president internalizes that.”
The Wall Street Journal wondered if one might reasonably conclude that the president will eventually be “comfortable” with same-sex marriage.
Gibbs hesitated, before offering, “I don’t know the answer to that, Laura. I think he listens to those around him who– and those that he meets, that talk about feeling like they’re not treated the same and– even while they’re good parents, they’re good people, and that’s something that he thinks about.”
