Pura, an executive pastry chef at Taste catering and event planning in San Francisco, tells of being friendless while attending a conservative, "almost racist high school" and being picked on for his racial background, his language, culture, and his sexuality. He remembers anticipating a time when this would change and finding liberation during his second week in college when he kissed a boy. "It was like rainbows exploded all around me," he says. "It was amazing."
Pura also recalls coming out to his family, saying that his mother is "now the best advocate for gay rights," and that his sister has since come out as gay.
