Country singer Chely Wright engaged to gay activist

By Alex Dobuzinskis -

(Reuters) - Country singer Chely Wright, who surprised fans by coming out as gay last year, is engaged to a lesbian civil rights activist, People magazine said on Wednesday.
Wright, 40, and fiancee Lauren Blitzer, an activist for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, plan to get married in Connecticut in August.
"They met through their youth advocacy work, and say that their passion for Scrabble holds them together," Wright's representative told the magazine.
Connecticut is one of five U.S. states that has legalized same-sex marriage.
Wright in 1995 was named best new female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. Her hit songs include "Shut Up and Drive" and "Single White Female," which topped the country music charts in 1999.
Wright came out in May last year and was the first major country music artist to declare that she was gay. Wright said had she felt compelled to conceal her sexual orientation for years in order to make it in the country music business.
