Thank Secretary Sebelius for Tackling LGBT Health Disparities Today!

Earlier this month, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a number of steps her Department was recommending to the President to improve the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. HHS’s recommended actions are enormously valuable as they will directly support and strengthen the overall health and well-being for our LGBT loved ones and their families. These changes include:
  • Integrating an even stronger component focusing on LGBT youth in all anti-bullying initiatives;
  • Reducing the barriers encountered by prospective and current LGBT foster and adoptive parents;
  • Requiring all organizations serving runaway and homeless youth to be equipped to serve LGBT youth.
Additionally, the Secretary has committed to prohibiting workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity for HHS employees and programs, increasing the number of federally-funded health surveys that collect sexual orientation and gender identity data, and encouraging health profession training programs to include LGBT cultural competency curricula. These commitments are major advocacy wins that support PFLAG’s ongoing efforts to improve the health and well-being of LGBT people.
As HHS begins to implement these important changes, it is essential that we thank Secretary Sebelius for using every available resource to further strengthen protections for our loved ones. Please take a moment of your time to express your gratitude for these significant actions! It is as simple as clicking here to customize your own electronic thank-you note.
