The Culture Civil War Grows Stronger

By David Mixner -

As California Governor Jerry Brown indicated a few weeks ago, we are indeed more divided than at anytime since the Civil War. The divide seems to politically be split evenly among American citizens. Unfortunately for LGBT Americans we are at the center of this ideological battle. Ever since the Republicans have taken control of the House of Representatives and many state governments it is clear that their agenda is not one of creating jobs, taking care of Americans or respecting rights.
They seem to have a five part thrust which includes:
-Removing and stopping any rights for LGBT Americans
-Busting unions
-Denying American women the right to control their own destinies.
-Protecting the rich
-Cutting programs to help the poor and middle classes for improving themselves.
This week alone we have seen the House of Representatives in Washington pass legislation that would undercut the repeal of DADT. In Minnesota, the Republicans just passed a ballot measure that would categorize their LGBT citizens in their State Constitution as separate from the rest of Minnesotans and ban marriage equality. In New York, the Conservative Party has declared the any Republican who votes for marriage equality will not receive their endorsement. Proposed legislation in Tennessee that would ban saying the word 'gay' in any of that state's schools along with overturning any local anti-discrimination ordnances. In Florida, Governor Rick Scott is still working to end LGBT adoption that was recently passed in that state.
Quite honestly the list is too long for any article, blog or publication. The facts are clear. A major part of the Republican Party agenda is to kill any legislation that would grant a measure of equality to LGBT Americans. Not only will they kill legislation advancing our rights, they are doing their best to repeal any past advances.
It does not take much imagination to see what would happen if the Republicans gain control of both Houses of Congress and the Presidency. We would be cooked.
