Updates from The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging

Hilary Meyer

In a perfect world, LGBT older adults would have direct access to culturally competent medical, legal, financial and social services that specialize in their unique needswhether they live in New York City; Bucks County, PA; Chicago, IL; rural Florida; or suburban L.A. That once distant reality has begun taking form as the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging.

I'd like to begin by thanking for your interest in the Resource Center and for remaining connected. Today, I'm pleased and proud to share with you some of our recent progress and upcoming advancements. You may be interested to know that, since the launch of the website in October 2010, the Resource Center has made some incredible strides, including:

  • Unveiling a robust and growing clearinghouse of multimedia resources on over 20 topics, from workforce and employment issues to aging with HIV, accessible in a variety of languages and larger font sizes.
  • Collaboratively compiling a training curriculum with our ally organizations to increase older adult cultural competence in LGBT organizations and increase LGBT cultural competence in aging organizations.
  • Hiring a full-time training coordinator to respond to training requests—over 50 requests in the last month alone—from organizations coast to coast.
  • Debuting a caregiving portal with support and educational resources for caregivers of LGBT older adults—as well as caregiving and long-term healthcare planning advice for caregivers of every identity.
  • Generating more than 34,000 unique visitors, 75,000 visits, 110,000 page views and nearly 1 million hits.
And the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging continues to grow with input from supporters like you. Many of you completed our survey earlier this year, telling us what you'd like to see on our site—and we listened. In two weeks, based on your feedback, we will unveil a new section on legal support and long-term financial planning for LGBT older adults. There you will find exciting new features like an interactive state map to help you pinpoint legal resources in your area, information on Social Security and the LGBT community, and articles and videos with tips from practicing attorneys about legal documents you need.

Thank you for visiting the website, accessing and utilizing these resources and spreading the word.

All the best,

Hilary Meyer
Director, National Resource Center on LGBT Aging
