“This is a private issue that should never be determined by the government,” says Sedwick, the Golden Globe Award-winning star of The Closer. “Everyone has the right to choose who they love and how they express that love.”
Bacon adds, “We all deserve the right to marry the person that we love, so join us in supporting marriage equality.”
Groups including HRC celebrated the election of three pro-equality lawmakers last week in the New York state senate, where the marriage equality bill failed by a vote of 38-24 last year. Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo wants to sign a marriage equality bill, but the timing and outcome of another vote is unclear for the moment as recounts are underway in three senate races, which will determine control in the closely divided 62-member senate. The three Democratic incumbents hanging in the balance are marriage equality supporters. However, advocates also see an opening for marriage equality in the event of a Republican takeover, following a commitment last month from GOP leader Dean Skelos that he would allow the bill to come for a vote should his party win the majority.
Bacon and Sedwick appear in the seventh video in the high-profile series for the HRC Campaign for New York Marriage. Previous videos have featured Fran Drescher, Moby, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, actress Julianne Moore and designer Kenneth Cole. Future videos will feature David Chang, Tom Colicchio, Whoopi Goldberg, Ethan and Ryan Hawke, Christopher Meloni, Joan Rivers, Daphne Ruben-Vega, Sunrise and Mark Ruffalo, and former New York City Mayor David Dinkins.
