The 2010 AIDS Walk Los Angeles kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 9:15 a.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard. About 30,000 people are expected to participate in the 6.2-mile AIDS Walk, which raised money for AIDS Project Los Angeles and other LA County AIDS service organizations.
This is the 26th year for the AIDS Walk – but HIV/AIDS statistics are still startling: about half of all new HIV infections occur in people 25 years of age or younger; in the US, one in five of those infected with HIV each year is unaware of their status; and every nine and a half minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV, according to a press released from co-sponsor City of West Hollywood, citing data from the Centers for Disease Control.
Meanwhile, says APLA in a statement about the AIDS Walk Los Angeles:
”In a last-minute move before he signed the state budget, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed $52 million in critical spending that was to support HIV/AIDS care and prevention work across California.
That means that California once again has zero state funding for HIV prevention programming for the second year in a row.”
For those traveling around WeHo, be advised that the street closures during AIDS Walk include:
• Santa Monica Boulevard between San Vicente Boulevard and La Brea Avenue
• Melrose Avenue between La Brea Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard.
