LGBT Community Rallies In The Bronx

The group stopped and prayed in front of 1910 Osborne Place
 the site of alleged anti-gay hate crimes in October.

BRONX, N.Y. (WCBS 880) – Dozens of people from the LGBT community rallied in the Bronx to stop hate crimes.

The group marched 2.5 miles before stopping and praying in front of the abandoned building on Osborne Place. That’s where three men were allegedly attacked viciously for being gay in October.

“It’s not acceptable,” Rev. Carman Hernandez said. “Hate crimes, bigotry, bullying—all the negativity. It’s not acceptable.”

The dozens of men and women from the LGBT community told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall that the rally is a message for everyone to stop the hatred.

“For so long the Bronx has been very quiet about LGBT issues. This particular event sparked the feeling to doing something and how do you do it—you do it in unity,” Antonio Centano said.

Centano said he has friends who have been attacked because they are gay.

“I was born and raised in this borough. I don’t want my borough to be seen as a non-safe place to live,” one man said. “That is not the Bronx spirit. That is the image people are getting with these types of crimes.”
