Gay Sex is More Evolved Than Everything Else, Ever

 By Allison Hope-

A fabulously funny and fascinating article on AutoStraddle, a site that traverses the intersections of "news, entertainment and girl-on-girl action," humorously presents the ultimate argument in support of same-sex desire.
Gay sex is plainly and simply evolutionary, the article argues. Following the Darwinian survival of the fittest theory, if "gay" were somehow a defective gene, as some purport, we would have been whittled away by natural selection. By the same token, the increasing size of those that identify as LGBTQ demonstrates evolutionary validation. It's challenging to decipher just how shifting social norms contribute to this reality (in other words, maybe more gay people aren't being born, but rather we're just more able to express our diverse sexual selves), but regardless, if gay were somehow unnatural, then why is it an intrinsic inclination?
The article points to a study by Stanford scholar Joan Roughgarden, who found that, "The more complex and sophisticated a social system is … the more likely it is to have homosexuality intermixed with heterosexuality."
Author Jenny P. talks mainly, though, of the act of sex itself and how the things that gay people tend to do in bed are physiologically more enjoyable than heterosexual sex, particularly than the baby-making act. "If gays are so unnatural and such demon outliers to society then why is everybody's most pleasurable position the gay position?" she asserts. "Why is gay sex more perfectly designed for pleasure than straight sex?"
She points out how porn stars can't orgasm from heterosexual sex, but often have to use their hand to do the job (and the same might be said of heterosexual couples engaging in what we think of when we think of procreative sex).
Most importantly, perhaps, is that Jenny raises the significant, foundational question of "Who says making babies is more important than having orgasms? Besides your grandmother?"
OK, so there are probably a handful more who believe — or at least who were taught to think they believe — that procreative sex is all-important, but the point raised is poignant. Most people, LGBTQ people included, operate on the premise that baby-making sex is somehow more legitimate than sex purely for pleasure.
"If gays are a threat to civilization," Jenny concludes, "than why do the smartest animals on the planet basically live Adrienne Rich's theory of the sexual continuum? Were they just brainwashed at Vassar? Possibly."
Although it may be challenging to talk sex — or evolution for that matter — with those on the right, or those who are deeply religious, some valid arguments are raised here, ones that could hold up in debates with the more logical of the homophobic contingent.
