According to The Sun, new character Marc (Andrew Hall) will have a female alter ego Marcia.
Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) and Claudia Colby (Rula Lenska) take an interest in Marc, but become suspicious when they see a mystery woman leaving his house.
Unbeknown to them, it is Marcia setting off on a night out in Manchester’s gay village.
At first he tells them they saw his sister but they eventually find out about Marcia.
A source said: “Many men aren’t gay but like to wear a frock. Cross-dressing is another taboo that soaps are looking to tackle.”
The soap has had a trans character, Hayler Cropper, since 1998.
It is also set to have its first civil partnership, it was reported in December.
Coronation Street, created by gay writer Tony Warren, celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
Stars of the show led the gay Pride parade in Manchester in August and some of the cast have been involved in promoting anti-bullying initiatives.
